DEBATE: RIO FERDINAND SHOULD BE ENGLAND CAPTAIN
RIO FERDINAND SHOULD BE ENGLAND CAPTAIN
Defenders make the best captains
Rio is considered to be amongst the finest defenders in the world today. As arguably our best defender he should be England captain.
There is more to being a captain than being a good player. If this was the case, many teams would not have the captains they do now. Being a captain is about being someone who the team looks up to and respects. You need to lead by example, be able to inspire your team and hold them together. Being a captain requires alot of discipline. Rio is certainly not this person.
RIO FERDINAND SHOULD BE ENGLAND CAPTAIN
He has no experience of captaining his club side
Rio was captain for the Roma/Man Utd match last night and was arguably man of the match. He usually takes the captains arm band when Ryan Giggs is not selected or is substituted. Therefore it is incorrect to assert that he is not an experienced captain.
Rio is not an experienced captain.

Wayne Rooney would be a better choice for England captain
Man Utd is a good team, Rooney just a component, and no evidence that he can lead anything to date.
Despite the fact that Christiano Ronaldo catches the eye and makes the headlines each week it is Rooney who is the talisman, inspiration and dynamo behind Man Utd’s success. He has been absent from the team each time United have lost a match this season. If the captain should be a player who leads by example then for his energy and determination alone he should get the vote. Add to this the fact that he is arguably the most talented English player and that he enjoys the respect and admiration of the rest of the England squad. If one is looking to appoint the England captain from the ranks of Man Utd then Rooney would be a more positive choice of captain than Rio.

Rio is not a good role model
As someone who has served a ban for missing a drugs test and also been involved in some less than savoury behaviour away from the football pitch Rio should not captain the side.
The role of captain is much more than as a leader on the pitch – indeed it is arguable that the choice of captain has little if any influence on the performance of a team during a match. The importance of the captain is more his ability in a PR role – to represent the team to the worlds media and to act as a liason between the players and the management away from the playing arena. Rio would be just as vocal an organiser of the defence and perform his duties for the team equally well whether he wore the arm band or not.
