Debatewise debate DEBATE: THE PUBLIC ARE DISENGAGED FROM MAINSTREAM POLITICS

Most people don’t care about politics. Political parties have no relevance for their lives, politicians all seem the same and their promises are always broken.

Debatewise debateTHE PUBLIC ARE DISENGAGED FROM MAINSTREAM POLITICS

Governments face a legitimacy crisis since the ‘public’ has become too fragmented.

The legitimacy of any government lies in its fair and just representation of the people that accept its legitimacy. As democratic organisations governments still fail the test since they find it necessary to exert direct power or influence through fear. The nuclear family image of the public no longer exists and can no longer be represented as it used to be.

The government has become more an instrument of public relations than of policy.

Ministers appear to be more concerned with appearances than with doing the right thing. Representation of the people has become subservient to the most appropriate representation of the situation (for the government).

To say that the government only act to please the majority is a ludicrous thing to say. If that were the case there would not be so many heavily bojected motions. The decision to invade Iraq was strongly opposed by the public yet they still went ahead with it.

Decisions are regularly made without consultation of the people.

The government assumes that an electoral victory is a mandate to bypass the public from thereon in. True democracy is accountable at all times to the people.

Governments can not represent ‘all’ so must represent the majority.

In any voting system there are those voters whose wishes will not be represesented. It is a process of democracy that the greater good be served.

Governments can call upon a broad spectrum of advice to gain the wider perspective.

The general public’s opinion may be limited in scope. Only the government can access all the available debate to focus the greatest amount of information on a problem.
