Debatewise debate DEBATE: RELIGION SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN POLITICAL DEBATE

Religion is a key part of many people's lives and should not, therefore, be deliberately kept out of political debate. Because most Western societies are primarily Christian any attempt to keep religion out of politics maintains the status quo and makes it harder for people of other religions to have their needs met.

Members of parlament are representative of the voters

The democratic nature of parlament means that a representation of each class of people in the country should be able to debate, whether it is Cristian, Catholic, Muslem or disabled, libral etc.

Members of parliament must be representative of all of their constituents, regardless of religion. An MP represents a group of people living in an area who elect him on his policies or party. If religion was the main criteria for election i could create divides amongst the electorate, and a non secular MP would be unable to represent members of all faiths as effectively as a secular one.

The unwritten constitution is predominately written with Christian morality in mind

Parliament was created in the late seventh centuary when Christianity and Catholocism were the main faiths. The entire legal system and executive, (Parliament) still include references to a Western God, for example swearing on the Bible.

The main benefit of having an "unwritten constitution" is that it can be subject to change and alteration when society changes over time. Hence although Parliament was founded in a time of greater religious belief, there is nothing set down dictating that such objectives must be upheld.

Religious views on such matters as stem cells are perfectly valid.

Many people are unconfortable with the idea of using either embrionic stemcells or animal stem cells in medicine whether they are religious or not. Religion seeks to promote a code of living and morality (do not steal, do not kill), and such codes are valid ones widely subscribed to, even by people who do not believe in God. It makes sense to include religious opinions in debates because they are widely subscribed and adhered to.

Religion does not equate solely to morality. You can have viewpoints and live by a highly moral code without being religious: all it does is cloud the waters regarding what is moral (religion) and what is moral (humanism).

The constitution of the country is unwritten for a reason, it may change and grow as our society grows therefore iradicating the need for religion

Maybe it was forseen that such a time would come that holy men should not have a say, the constituion, un like the US, is not written, we therefore have the freedom to change it in time.

Religion is outdated in the current world which is composed of many faiths as it is

There are not enough representatives of all faiths and beliefs in parlament to make it fair when debating something of an ethical nature, therefore it should not be a basis for debate.
