Debatewise debate DEBATE: PREGNANT MOTHERS SHOULD HAVE HOME BIRTHS TO RELIEVE A STRUGGLING NHS‏

With NHS funds stretched and the number of pregnancies rising it must be considered whether home births have become the best option. Indeed with today's prenatal technology and the declining standard of cleanliness in hospitals, it may not only be the better for the economy but also for mothers to be.

New technonlogy has helped limit the risks of home births.

Once upon a time it was considered dangerous and risky to undertake a home birth. Public opinion followed the view that there would be huge risk to mother and child. The safer option was to go to hospital under the supervision of doctors and with high technological equipment at hand, the risks involved in childbirth would be limited. However the advances of prenatal technology means potential risks to the baby may now be detected well before the birth. Therefore if no abnormalities are detected and there is a history of safe deliveries in the expectant mothers family, then there is no reason why hospital birth would be safer than home birth.

Just because there is a history of safe births in a family, it does not follow that a birth will be complication free. In fact, women who have several children report a different experience with each birth.
There is also an issue with hygiene. Hospitals, are supposed to be thoroughly clean and germ free, more so than an average dwelling at any rate. Given this, women should have a pressure free choice of whether to go to hospital or to stay at home.

There are inadequate resources for pregnant mothers at hospitals.

In less affluent areas there may not be enough resources. Many primary care trusts do not have enough money allocated towards maternity wards. Despite government proposals, the money simply is not where it needs to be. Women opting for home births would benefit from their own midwife but in a hospital there may not be one housewife per pregnant woman. Thus the standard of care received during chilbirth would be lower in the hospital.

Hospital standards are no longer up to scratch.

There are constant reminders of this in the headlines. Although MRSA limiting targets have recently been met, it does still leave doubt in the mind of some patients. For those entering hospital in order to undertake surgery there is no choice. However for expectant mothers who have received the all-clear (in that their delivery should not have any abnormal risk), they can choose whether to bring their child into a possible unclean and unhygenic world or whether to go through with the delvery at home.

Not all risk can be dispelled.

Although technology has allowed doctors to find out about possible abnormalities , it can not find all abnormalities. There may still be a undetected risk or chance risk that something could go wrong and hospital equipment is needed. Clearly access to this equipment would be easier in a hospital birth but not at a home birth.

NHS resources would still be stretched.

Undertaking a home brth as opposed to a hospital birth would not alleviate NHS resources. In some cases it could exacerbate them becuase there are not enough midwives to match pregnancies. If a midwife is attending to a home birth she will only be taking care of one woman. However she will be absent from the hospital, where, the chance is, more women would be in need.

Mothers should be given a choice, not told either way.

The healthcare commission has said that 43% of women were not asked about which birthing choice they would prefer. (Daniel martin "Home births boom as more women fear hospital infections and midwife shortages" (2008) [online] available at; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1061755/Home-births-boom-women-fear-hospital-infections-midwife-shortages.html) Some women may need the reassurance of giving birth in a hospital and others may not. It is an important time in many peoples lives and if resources in their local area can give them a choice then the mother should be allowed to make it.
