DEBATE: SHOULD THIS BE THE LAST SERIES OF BIG BROTHER?
SHOULD THIS BE THE LAST SERIES OF BIG BROTHER?
We have been contemplating whether Big Brother should end for some time now
Since series 5 we have been contemplating whether Big Brother should end and make way for some more shows. It appeals to a group of people and perhaps even a broad group of people, but the same show every year, just with different people, is starting to get a bit tiring, and it appears that this argument on whether to end Big Brother has been going on for some time.
Just because an idea has been contemplated it does not mean it should be carried out. Yes, every year the idea that Big Brother should end has come out, but each year that idea has been rejected. Big Brother has survived its constant criticism and has fought back to stay on TV. For that reason alone, Big Brother has earned it’s place on our screens and should stay there.

There are less interesting characters
Even to people who like Big Brother and watch all of the series, there are less and less good characters, and more false and unappealing people who are in for a fast “buck”. It appears that once Big Brother looses its ratings that there will be no need for the series anymore. People are getting fed up with Big Brother always being so intense and there always being advertisement and interruptions of programmes to highlight that Big Brother’s Little Brother is doing an interview on Jade Goody even though she left the house about two years ago. We cannot escape Big Brother and this is beginning to drive the general population mad.
I do not think it can be said that there are less interesting characters. The housemates are a cross section of society; even the disabled were represented this year. You cannot have a house full of isolated large characters. There needs to be some variation, from the confusing Darnell, to the hilarious Michael and the plain Jane Rachel. Individual characters are not the defining point of Big Brother, how such characters interact is.

Big Brother is not very popular amongst groups of people
A lot of people arguably do not like Big Brother, or even reality television, and get annoyed when such shows become a series and take over the television during all hours whilst the housemates are even filmed sleeping. It can be considered a waste of time and with a group of attention-seeking individuals who arguably all have mental problems. It seems that to some people, Big Brother would have been more accepted amongst the general public if it had just stuck to one series in the first place.
“A lot of people arguably”, “arguably all have mental problems”, “it seems that to some people”, these are the statements of a weak argument. So what if “some people” do not like the show? I personally think that Songs of Praise is out of touch with multicultural Britain but I am not canvassing that the show be taken off of television. Channel 4 enjoys being talked about. Channel 4 is not the BBC, it is a controversial television channel. It likes to annoy the conservative British public who only want to watch white-washed programs. Some people do not like it “arguably”? Good!!

It is not really bringing anything to television
Big Brother could never actually be called an intelligent or talented programme. It consists of stupidity and annoying people who know they are in a house being watched and play up to it because they crave attention and fame. Arguably, this is what some viewers want, but for the rest of society it is frustrating having to skip channel 4 in order to see if, what would have been good on television in replacement of Big Brother, is replaced itself by a tiresome and childish programme. Viewers could do with a new series of something slightly more interesting than Big Brother as it has already been on for around 9 series.
Big Brother does not have to bring anything to television
Big Brother does not have to bring anything in particular to television because it is not aimed to do so. It is meant to entertain and to catch the eye of the public who like to watch the banter between the individuals involved. The purpose is to entertain and it does it for some people.

The ratings are always fantastic
Each year of Big Brother proves to be a success for reality shows because it brings in the votes and the viewers remain glued to their televisions in order to see who gets voted off or who will stay. A lot of people do actually like Big Brother and we have to cater for all tastes on television. The ratings are what made Big Brother continue each year in the first place, and television will not want to let it slip away that easily. I think that some viewers just like the similarity and that sort of show and that is what brings the ratings.

Big Brother highlights problems with mainstream society
Big brother is a reality show, and the cold truths of society and behaviour are brought to public attention. Alexandra this year got thrown out due to her aggressive behaviour, as did Dennis. But these are people chosen out of our society, if they behave like that on camera, they will behave like that off camera. It is good that Big Brother points out the flaws in individuals and our society. Only when we recognise a problem can we do something about it.
SHOULD THIS BE THE LAST SERIES OF BIG BROTHER?
it solidifies the values of our society
In 2007, who could forget the alleged racist bullying of Shilpa Shetty? It was well documented, on TV, the news, newspapers and even in the House of Commons. Everyone outside the house agreed that Shilpa Shetty was being mistreated. We, as a society, stated that we would not accept such behaviour from these individuals. Consequently, Jade Goody’s perfume was pulled out of many shop windows, the sponsors of Big Brother pulled out. Everyone united against racism. Uniting society against racism is something even government policies have troubled with, let alone any other television program.
The same with Dennis, we all united in stating that spitting was unacceptable. It creates a social consensus which makes everyone feel part of something bigger, society.
