Debatewise debate DEBATE: SHOULD A NORTH AMERICAN UNION BE CREATED AS PROPOSED?

In September 2005 the leaders of Canada, United States and Mexico met together and signed the Security and Prosperity Partnership. This was the first agreement to begin to merge the three countries together in terms of Trade and Standards, in a similar respect to how the European Union was initially created. The North American Union would fully merge the three countries together as with the European Union, and would also introduce a new currency - the Amero. This house would like to determine whether the North American Union should be created as proposed. Find out more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Union

It will have economic benefits

The success of the European Union has proved that this kind of co-operation can be extremely beneficial. Increased freedom of movement across borders will allow industry to more easily meet labour demands in response to market forces. This kind of integration is essential to allow the U.S. to properly compete in the global economy.

The U.S.A is already a big global player; it doesn’t need a union to help it compete economically. Anyway, these countries already have Free Trade Agreements in place.

It will improve quality of life in Mexico

A North American Union would be a great benefit to Mexico, helping to raise the standard of living and the opportunities open to its citizens. At present many Mexicans are forced to migrate illegally to the U.S. to find work; with a union in place not only would they be able to work legally, but economic growth at home would allow many to find employment in their own country.

This improvement must be to the detriment of the other nations in the union. Look at the EU; British funds end up subsidising futile continental farming projects rather than improving their own provision. The U.S. and Canada do not need to be dragged down by the problems of Mexico.

The biggest will always become a bully.

The UK, however, was largely created in the 17th century. Scotland and Wales had never had their own modern, democratic government until the process of political devolution in the 20th century. The relationship between these nations, which were unified under the rule of a single, all powerful King, is hardly an appropriate model for the proposed union of three modern nations. Scotland and Wales are in the process of becoming increasingly politically independent, and it is not exactly true that England ‘grab any and all resources.’ Wales, for instance, have free prescriptions on the NHS, which the English have to pay for. Scottish university students do not pay the high tuition fees which are faced by English students.

Look at the UK. England holds sway in every facet of the lives of Scots, Northern Irish and Welsh. They call London the capital of the UK (WRONG!), keep the parliaments in England, reserve all the really meaningful powers for themselves, grab any and all resources rightly belonging to the smaller nations (Scotland’s oil for instance) and generally just rule the roost.
This is a natural and unstoppable process. Scotland is only now, after 300 years, beginning to yearn for the freedom of nationhood and independence again.
My advice to Canada and Mexico is simple. Don’t do it!

Proposed?

The Independent Task Force on North America called for the extension of the SPP to achieve greater economic integration by 2010. They stated that they envisioned "establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community, the boundaries of which would be defined by a common external tariff and an outer security perimeter." Therefore you cannot clame that the NAU is a mere myth.

The idea of a North American Union is nothing more than an elaborate conspiracy theory. It is based on a misrepresentation of the goals of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) which was founded in 2005. It has never really been ‘proposed’ for the very good reason that the three independent nations supposedly involved are getting on fine on their own.
