Debatewise debate DEBATE: THE NBA'S AGE LIMIT SHOULD BE CHANGED TO TWO YEARS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

The way that so many young basketball players are leaving school to play sport without gaining a proper education is despicable. To better teach these young adults, the age limit should be at two years after finishing high school. In this way, these individuals will learn the process of having a education better.

Education

By having the age limit raised these young adults will see the good part of life, which a degree can provide for them. They will be broadly skilled, educated individuals with opportunities to fall back on beyond their sporting aspirations.

Not everyone is built to finish school, just look at the drop out rate at some colleges. This should be a stepping stone for the individuals to get in the NBA.

To be better prepared for their sporting career

This limit of stay in school is not a good rule; these young basketball players are only going to school to be drafted. They don’t even care about the material which they are learning in class, or even going to class. If these individuals are forced to stay in school longer they will have more time to develop their sporting skills. Look at Tim Duncan; this man went to school for a full four years and became and excellent player. Brendan Wright of the Golden State Warriors was a very talented player at the University of North Carolina. He left school as a freshman in 2007 for the NBA draft, was picked in the top ten and signed a contract for millions of dollars. The lack of skills to cope at NBA level is a big problem for young players. If he had stayed in school for one more year his talent could have been used to develop skills needed for the NBA. Now he is on the bench and do not know if the team will give him a chance to show his ability.

It could better prepare them, but only in the short term. The sooner individuals are able to reach the NBA, the more time they get a chance to learn from the best players on the planet. In the long run, they will learn a lot quicker in that competitive environment with the most sophisticated training than at University.

To leave other options open

Once the young adults leave school, the view of a full time adult begins. Under the present system, if these kids do not get drafted into the NBA, with no degree most of them have to get normal jobs. If they were to stay in school due to the NBA raising the age limit, these people would be able to enjoy fun aspect of being in college and get a degree. Then they will have decent employment options, and have enjoyed their youth , even if their sporting dream falls through.

If being a professional sportsman is their ambition and they have the drive and talent, it would be a waste to put off following their dream just to have a bit of fun and pursue plan B. If their NBA career doesn’t work out then there is always the opportunity to go back to college afterwards

Adulthood

As the general public our goal is to help the young generation have a better future. Which mean doing what it seems best for them. Yes, the choices they pick are up to they but some interact can only help them later in time.

What is the one thing people are always being told; “follow the rules". When looking from that view, it’s up to the individual what happens to them. If a person follows the rules stated and leaves school for better life, if it doesn’t happen then they have to deal with it. That’s the reality of being an adult; many aspects of life will not fall in your direction. So they have to find another way to reach their dream.

Money

Money is always good and it seems that once you make a large amount of it you will never run out. When people do not know the business side of the NBA, many of these young players could end up broke later in life. Once you leave school the advantage of learning the business of the NBA is closing. Most players do not have the time to pay attention to their money; they are too busy travelling, and playing games. Business advisors who handle your money could be stealing it without you ever knowing. To stay in school and learn some business skills can only help them in the long run.

If I could tell a person that it was possible for them to earn about ten million dollars over the span of five years, their answer would be ‘how do I get it?!’ Plus, if it was just from playing basketball, a game they love to play, almost anybody would love to do that. The financial benefit of being a professional sportsman at an early age is obvious, especially for talented individuals from impoverished backgrounds. This is a benefit which can help the whole family, and get the family to a better life.

Health

In the view of modern medicine, there are many ways to help people that have big injuries. The NBA has access to the best medical technology and expertise in sports injuries on the planet. If a big injury was to happen to a star player, there are actions which can to take to help that person get back on the court, and possibly be better than before.

Imagine a basketball player who was very great; someone of his talents only comes once a decade. One day while playing a game at college he blows out his knee, and is told he can never play basketball never again. Through this one game, this man stands to lose million of dollars he could have gained from the NBA. His career is over before it has even begun. That’s why the age limit should not be implemented; if a young individual wants to better their life from the NBA then let them. It only takes one bad slip or fall on the court to end someone’s career.
