Debatewise debate DEBATE: DOES EROTIC EQUAL PORNOGRAPHIC?

Distinction is often made between Erotica and Pornography, although depending on the viewer they may seem one in the same. Where do we draw the line beween what is Erotic and what is ponographic?

Debatewise debateDOES EROTIC EQUAL PORNOGRAPHIC?

Erotica is different from pornography in objective, purpose and symbolic content.

There is a clear distinction between what is erotic and what is pornographic. Pornography’s objective is the graphic depiction of sexually explicit scenes. It is a detailed and naturalistic image, a verbal description or a demonstration of a sexual intercourse and/or genitals with an end purpose to arouse sexual excitement in a human being, usually, in exchange for money. It can also be exploitative or degrading. Its symbolic content is very limited and focused on sex only. Erotica’s objective, on the other hand is the portrayal of human anatomy and sexuality in a more multi-layered and polysemic way. It seeks to tell a story with sexual themes and evocative imagery. Its purpose is to explore desire, love, sexuality, human anatomy and passion through mystery and intrigue. It is because of these clear dissimilitudes which we can define them as separate entities.

The difference is very subtle. Pornography could be classed as anything showing nudity. Hence erotica, displaying nudity, would fit into this category.

Pornography is symbolically flat. Erotica is polysemic.

Pornography is symbolically unidimensional. It has only one purpose and objective, which is to sexually arouse the viewer.
Erotica, on the other hand, is polysemic. It has several layers of meaning. Either depicted in paint, film, song, music, photography, sculpture, poetry, literature or the spoken word, the audience can relate to the piece in several different levels, possibly but not necessarily sexual, and can reflect upon its alternative meanings.

Erotica is an art, pornography is an industry.

Erotica is part of us being human. It is done for the art of portraying human sexuality. It is an art. It is done to explore the senses. Pornography’s objective is sexual pleasure. It is an industry whose sole concern is not being artistic or creative but in making money from an audience.

Erotica is pornography

Erotica is Pornography because at the end they both have a corrupting impact on viewers/consumers. They both have a corrosive effect on traditional family and religious values. Erotic art is pornography and is not redeemed by other artistic, literary or political merit which the work might posses because the outcome is the same. Any sexual material is obscene, erotica and pornography are both based on sexually explicit material, therefore they are both one and same.

Debatewise debateDOES EROTIC EQUAL PORNOGRAPHIC?

Both erotica and pornography are one and the same, and therefore harmful to society.

Both erotica and pornography are one and the same because they are both harmful to its consumers by corrupting their morals and making them less likely to be able to have a long-term, loving relationship. They have one end meaning, explicit or implicit which lies in obscenity and therefore harmful to society.

Debatewise debateDOES EROTIC EQUAL PORNOGRAPHIC?

Erotica and pornography are both harmful industries.

According to anti-pornography feminists, pornography is not just a harmless entertainment or a cathartic, therapeutic fantasy. Unlike moral conservatives, who object to pornography on the grounds of the obscenity of its sexual explicit content and its corrosive effect on the conservative way of life, the primary focus of the feminist objection to pornography is on the central role that pornography is thought to play in the exploitation and oppression of women. Because erotica is so linked to pornography, it would suggest that they are both harmful industries.

I started this debate with friends, family and collegues after i was assigned to write a University paper about an "Erotic Art Exhibition" in London. After many discussions, i arrived at my own conclusion. Would be great to know what yours is.
