DEBATE: RUPERT MURDOCH SHOULD BE HELD TO ACCOUNT.
RUPERT MURDOCH SHOULD BE HELD TO ACCOUNT.
His position and influece is counter to any perception of democracy.
To have a tycoon such as Murdoch controlling many outlets of news can have a horrendous effect on any politician wanting to win support. It leads to politicians making policies that bend to the will of these press barons so that their papers will support the politicians and thus the readership will be inclined to. Indeed Neil Kinnock put his 1992 election defeat largely to the Sun’s polling day headline of "If Kinnock wins today, will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights", a paper owned by Murdoch and he credited himself with doing just that.
It is outrageous that such influence exists with next-to-nothing of a check and little means of keeping the views of his populist papers accountable. Or is it true, sceptically, that democracy really is just the one man, one vote?
The media is regulated to prevent bias such as this from taking place. Although it is a very difficult job to stop it, it must lessen the amount of influence that he has.
Murdoch as an individual may control more of the media than any other individual, but by no means does he have a monopoly or control a majority of it. A balance still exists.

Protection of freedom of expression
Status as a democracy always comes down to freedom. In our current society rights such as that of freedom of expression and freedom of enterprise are fundamental in preserving a democratic state. In order to allow every opinion to be represented we must allow citizens to express in any way possible their views and ideas. The fact that Murdoch is able to express these views through the national media is just a result of commercial freedom. It must be argued that a sufficient number of the population do share his views, otherwise people wouldn’t buy his newspapers. It would be too much to suggest that Murdoch sucessfully and completely represents the people, but it is sufficient to state that any influence he does is at the whim and the control of consumers. To officially call him to account would just contradict the principle of freedom of expression and would prevent a forum for good debate.
