Debatewise debate DEBATE: THE ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM WILL NEVER AGAIN WIN THE WORLD CUP.

England is simply not good enough to win the World Cup. Other countries have far more technically gifted players and they've got far more desire than our overpaid, over-pampered stars.

There is a dearth of English talent in the premiership, and in other major leagues.

The majority of clubs in the premiership rely on talent imported from Europe, Africa and elsewhere to support their bids for success in both the premiership and in Europe. The top English teams rarely play a majority of home based players, sometimes there is barely an English player on the pitch. And English players are barely represented abroad – the only foreign based player in the last England game plies his trade in America – which doesn’t really count, despite its name, as a major league.

The reason that foreign players want to play in England is because our premiership is the best league in the world. This is why so many English players choose to stay in their home nation rather than move to the lower quality leagues abroad (with the exception, of course, of Beckham). Our players are therefore tested in this high quality environment, playing for their club with the cream of football talent from around the world. That English players continue to make these squads, in competition with amazing players from other nations, proves the strength of our native talent.

The English press will frighten off or hound out any manager with any sense.

The atrocious levels of intrusion by the English media will leave any manager of the English national team with zero private life. The coverage of the private life of Sven-Goran Eriksson filled both back and front pages – there was even a recent story linking him with an amorous encounter with a younger woman who he had apparently kissed – turned out to be his daughter. This, along with the downright insulting headlines about managers such as Graham Taylor and Steve Maclaren, must turn many potential managers away from the game.

The simple argument against this is the current manager – in Capello England have a genuine world class manager, who will ignore the press, put up with no nonsense and get on with the job.

Coaching of young English children does not teach the skills necessary to play world class football.

Too frequently English players are outshone on the pitch by foreign players who can trap, hold and pass the ball with ease and panache when the English game seems to be more of a kick and charge or pass and stand about. We lack the basic skills which are taught in other countries before matches are even considered.

‘Panache’ is not necessarily what football needs- the more showy style favoured in some nations does not make for better quality play. It is the pace of the English game that makes the Premiership such an exciting league to play in; often foreign players struggle to match the levels of stamina and fitness that it requires. What the English style might lack in prettiness it makes up for in pace- with a little confiidence in our own particular virtues, it can be a world cup winning approach.

The talent does exist; it just needs confidence to flourish.

Wayne Rooney can’t play without better players around him. With Manchester United, Rotlnaldo makes him shine; playing for England he hasn’t got the support to make things happen, which leads to his petulant outbursts. Gerrard and Lampard are occasionally brilliant but never shine over a full ninety minutes. That leaves us with Wright-Phillips, Heskey, Owen, Joe Cole Peter Crouch – and surely nobody would put them in their dream world team?

Within the squad we now have Wayne Rooney, Stephen Gerrard, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand, all of whom have played at the highest club level. They would grace the top teams of any league, and make the first team of most national sides. These experienced players are backed up by younger talent such as Joe Hart, Ben Foster, Gaby Agbondlahor, Micah Richards and others, who are all potential world class players. With some confidence, and backing from the media and supporters, England could realistically be the next team to lift the world cup.

It is pointless debating over the likelihood of whether something will or will not happen

You cannot argue that the current state of English football will not affect the future of the national side. The decline of our international status in football will affect the enthusiasm and funding for the sport at grass roots level and prevent the development of future world class players.

The proposition motion states that it believes England will never again win the World Cup and it suggests reasons why it believes it will not do so. But the proposition has forgotten that everything changes. If there is a "dearth of talent", it may well change with time. The English press may change their minds if we keep losing and losing. Coaching can be changed. It is in no way certain that we will never win the World Cup again. It is possible. For that reason, the proposition case does not stand up.
