Debatewise debate DEBATE: THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE IS MORE EXCITING THAN OTHER EUROPEAN LEAGUES

The English Premier league has the best teams, the best players and the best fans. The fast-paced, aggressive and passionate nature of all makes it the most exciting league to watch by far.

It is fast paced and aggressive.

Compared to other major European leagues, the Premier League is fast paced and the teams are aggressive and tactical.

It has the most exciting players and stars.

The Premier League has the most exciting young talent and experienced old players. Christiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are but two examples.

English fans are more dedicated than their European Counterparts

Its a well known fact that English crowds cheer more and love their game more than their European counterparts. They also follow the Premier League closely and are forever dedicated to their teams.

There is too much money in the Premier League

While it would be fair to accept that there is a lot of money in the English game, this shouldn’t be a reason to argue against it being exciting. Indeed, perhaps the reason there is so much money in the game now is precisely because it IS so exciting. Advertisers, TV rights and, of course the fans who all ultimatley ‘subsidise’ the ‘obscene’ wages of many footballers, surely do so because they are interested in the fare on offer. It’s called supply and demand – and if the English game wasn’t exciting then this would soon be reflected in the money coming into the game.

Much like one or two of it’s European counterparts, the Premier League has far too much money circulating through it. Wages at the top of the Premiership pyramid are seen by most as obscene, and rightly. Michael Ballack taking home over one hundred thousand pouns a week is quite frankly, offensive. It looks likely that the game will ultimately collapse in on itself, with financial pressure becoming too great for a good number of teams just trying to maintain Premier League status.

There are too many foreign players in the Premier League

English football is no longer English. The Premier League might well be exciting, but what is exciting about the way our developement of home grown talent is going? There should be some rules imposed that dictate how many foreign players are allowed to be fielded, simply, for the good of the ENGLISH game. What has happened to our national side over the years? All expectation and nothing to back it up, with woeful exits. Vindication for the point that home grown talent, and a majority of it within our teams is plain to see with the way the Italians have started to go about things. World Cup winners, and over 75% of the players there are Italian.

I think there are two separate arguments in this. Firstly, the number of foreign players and how much money is not going to change the amount of entertainment and how exciting it is. Yes, they are a contributory factor but if we had less foreign players, there's no reason why it couldn't be equally as exciting. In fact, I'd say less money, makes the leagues more equal and therefore competitive, meaning the games become much more interesting unpredictable and therefore much more exciting.

Look at the leagues before the PL was introduced. Players got paid peanuts and it was very entertaining. It's also interesting to note that that is the only time we've had any relative success - coincidence?

I'd say that it is due to the relative nature that we tend to focus more on fitness, speed and strength that it is more fast-paced and therefore exciting.
